the language i might strive to excavate from the limits my vocabulary seems as doomed to fail in capturing the night safari experience as do the night time photographs in capturing an image…but what else do i have? (interpretive dance?!?!). at the behest of 2 young italian travelers, we drove into the dark of the evening to the area of highway between Minneriya and a smaller park, where elephants are known to cross from the one park to the other. fortune smiled repeatedly on us and we encountered 3 different groups, one mama, baby, and yearling splashing & drinking from the pool of a leaky water main, the other 2 groups ripping up clumps of grass a mere 20 feet from where we coasted in to observe, lights off, engine off, seated & silent (tho’ occasional whispers of awe and wonder could not be entirely contained). it is nothing short of miraculous and utterly magical to sit quietly in the presence of these beasts - without clear sight, other senses kick in, and the intimacy of being close enough to hear them breathe, rip the grass and chew with grinding teeth, snorting & snuffling, pawing at the ground to loosen roots… my heart felt likely to explode and my eyes welled with tears. so beautiful, so other and unknowable but for this precious chance to just be. together. wild and not.
deep deep gratitude. beyond this, words fail.
