pI have been stumbling around in awe, half the day, my soul on its knees in perpetual prayer and thanksgiving. oh, this Planet! oh, this Life!
I'm leaving Coromandel Town tomorrow, so I walked the last 3 tracks today. The one that inspired such a particular degree of reverence goes up alongside a beautiful deep dark jungle ravine and into an old growth Kauri grove!!! One of the few, if not perhaps the only, remaining stand in New Zealand. These amazing trees were all logged off, to near-extinction, by my ancestors (in the broadest sense), and now, the ones that remain are extremely susceptible to disease and insects, presumably that come from invasive non-native species. Anyway, words fail me - the depth of presence and power of these trees give such a profound sense of the sacred, and really put one in one’s place - a very similar to experience to that which I have felt in the Redwoods. I had to sit with them for 20 minutes, quiet and just Being with them and soaking it all in - their grace and forbearance, their life force, and the rich cacophony of bird songs that drenched the air all around. I feel insanely fortunate to be here witnessing such grace. Many many thanks. Knowing I could never capture it on my i Phone, I did try to document it, at least, mostly because I don’t imagine very many folks reading this know what a Kauri even looks like. The Grandmama Kauri in this grove, kind of the "centerpiece" of the park, is, I believe, well over 1000 years old!!! I could NOT give a sense of the scale and grandeur of that one, particularly the size of the trunk, but I did my best. Hope you enjoy the photos.
