6 horses in this cart of mind and each with its own direction of pull. The ties that bind : meeting people who are mothers, daughters, brothers; meeting, joining paths, splintering again, lovers traveling together, and those that bind ties where they find them. Just for the record - there are an inordinate number of young blonde women with crystal blue eyes and long legs running around these parts. It’s like a convention. I am invisible :))
“Surfed” today ( a generous appellation)… mountains of whitewater and wind, tho’ sunny and water warmer than “back home”. The coming weeks at Manu Bay and Whale Bay will give me a better indication, but thus far I am inclined to reconsider the surf-centric organization of my time here. Tilda is fun, and I’ve much to learn about mastering her specific hydrodynamics, but I am beginning to think that perhaps a trip focusing on exposure to as many different geological /geographical splendors as NZ has to offer might be a wiser course of action. What luck then, that a new storm front is said to be on its way (glass half full!!) and I can hunker down in the library tomorrow and do some serious research about the options. I am also dying to know more about the sociopolitical reality here and now - what are the relationships between Maori and Pakeha here. I’m not even sure what to call this, if it’s a stage - post-colonial? neocolonial? If the colonizers never leave, but rather cozy in to claim and stay, but give Maori names to everything from corner stores to national parks. Who’s giving, who’s taking? What is appropriation and what is reclamation? I am such an ignorant outsider. After surf and respite in hot tub, it is the animal body most present in awareness. A delicious concoction of tired, warmed, sated, contented Being. The womb of warm bed calls louder than the need for food (there’s always tomorrow for that) and with this thought, I happily heed the call, and close my eyes to cross the slow soft bridge to tomorrow.
