a1-3: our digs at Whiskey Point, 4-6 crocodile, best took-tuk ever, milk chocolate, 7-9 a muslim enclave between arugambay and pottuvil, 10-12 our new place and Main Point, Arugambay ARUGAMBAY Well, we made it at last. We are staying 4kms outside of A-Bay, at a right point break called Whiskey Point. The swell was underwhelming at first, and the break crowded with kooks, but yesterday there came new energy in the water, and with it a thinned crowd of higher calibre. I am being judicious in my approach, trying to let my shoulder strengthen to the specific task of surfing slowly… but my usual mental blocks are raising their silly, ugly heads as well. An unfamiliar break, the danger of kooks, and the regrettable fact that I am a shy surfer - I have always preferred to surf with friends, and find that it is taking an amount of discipline to get myself in the water. I feel silly, having lugged my board halfway around the world and all over this country, only to hesitate at the water’s edge. I’m doing it though, and have had some fun sessions. There are a ton of breaks here to explore - the next on my list are the Main Point in A-Bay, and 2 more intermediate breaks outside of town in the other direction. Praying for more swell. Another day, this one epic. Dawn patrol, yoga, a swim at Elephant Rock (also a really nice surf break - it’s on The List), then went to check the break at Okanda. Okanda is the site of a particularly important Hindu temple where childless (not childfree in this case) couples come to get a little divine assistance from the fertility goddess therein … (yeah, no, I did NOT enter the temple…!!! ) Anyway, there was a high wind by the time we reached the break whipping things up into a royal mess, but wow - in the right conditions, that place would be the bomb!!! Met some Israeli surfer girls there, who said the morning had been great… I’ll be going back fo’ sho”! Still another day. we moved to a great cheap place right in Arugam bay and minutes walk to Main point… which is FIRING today!!! there are 4-6 lines of 4-6 ft high peelers lining up and plenty of reforms right across the bay also. heaven. not gonna budge for many many days :) We have our own free standing cabana with good wifi enough front porch for asana practice, full use of the kitchen, and shady courtyard garden area, and a good fan. Happy camper :) below: Elephant Rock, not much swell that day, but potential!!! below: Okanda, stunning, isolated break near temple
